The EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholarship Program provides scholarships for two years of undergraduate study to rising junior undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields that directly support NOAA's mission. Participants conduct research at a NOAA facility during two paid summer internships.

Important dates: Applications are available annually from September through January.

Students from grades 6-14 use data from NOAA's GOES-16 or GOES-17 satellites to investigate weather and natural hazards. Students from the winning middle school, high school, and college teams will receive $25 gift cards and official GOES-T launch viewing invitations. Teachers coaching the winning teams will receive launch invites and conference travel support to attend and present at the 2020 American Meteorological Society Centennial meeting in Boston.

High school students participate in the LiMPETS environmental monitoring program in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.

LiMPETS is a citizen science program that monitors the coastal ecosystems of California and helps youth develop a scientific understanding of the ocean. LiMPETS monitors the biology in rocky intertidal and sandy beach ecosystems and aims to provide publicly accessible, scientifically sound, long-term data to inform marine resource management and the scientific community.

National Coral Reef Management Fellowship

NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary is one of the largest live-bottom reefs of the southeastern United States.

The fellowship program creates seven two-year positions at institutions in coral reef states and territories. Each position has its own distinct work plan, responding to specific needs for increased coral reef management capacity in each coral reef jurisdiction and provides training and professional development opportunities. Fellows will work on issues affecting U.S. coral reef ecosystems including climate change, land-based sources of pollution and fishing.

Office of Ocean Exploration and Research Explorer-in-Training Program

Explorer in Training, Rebekah Hernandez deploys the expendable bathythermograph, a device that records water temperature, off the stern of the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer.

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) places mapping trainees to participate in the Okeanos Explorer-in-Training program. This program is open to enrolled undergraduate and graduate students as well as individuals who have recently graduated from a higher education program. The Explorer-in-Training program will provide the opportunity to gain experience using an advanced multibeam bathymetric sonar mapping system, while contributing in a significant way to the Okeanos Explorer ocean exploration mission.
